Japanese Culture Day

Japanese Culture Day

The Japanese Culture Day provides an exciting opportunity for K-12 children, their families, and teachers to learn about Japanese culture through reading, writing, and craft-making with Japanese cultural and linguistic professionals. The Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW) will provide Japan-In-A-Suitcase, a program that introduces Japan and its culture. The National Conference of States Societies (NCSS) will bring cherry blossom princesses to make tiaras with children. Coinciding with the Olympics in Tokyo, Tsuyoshi Takemori from DC Yamato-juku Club will demonstrate Karate with his students. Karate will make its debut appearance at the Summer Olympics in 2020. He also plans to teach Kata to the audience, the solo form of the discipline; no violent movement is involved. The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library, offering access to the creative record of the United States —and extensive materials from around the world —both on-site and online. Japan-In-A-Suitcase will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., followed by Karate demonstration by Tsuyoshi Takemori. Takemori will be on-site between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to answer Q&A. Thomas Jefferson Building is one block from Capitol South Metro station. No parking on site is available.

Lee Ufan: Open Dimension

Lee Ufan: Open Dimensions

This exhibition could not be any boulder. For the first time in the Hirshhorn’s history, its outdoor Plaza will be transformed by a singular artist.

Lee Ufan: Open Dimensions an ambitious site-specific commission by the celebrated Korean artist Lee Ufan. The expansive installation, featuring 10 new sculptures from the artist’s signature and continuing Relatumseries, marks Lee Ufan’s largest single outdoor sculpture projectin the US, the first exhibition of his work in the nation’s capital, and the first time in the Hirshhorn’s 45-year history that its 4.3-acre outdoor plaza has been devoted, almost in its entirety, to the work of a single artist. Each of Lee’s sculptures responds to the Museum’s unique architecture and continues his practice of placing contrasting materials, such as stainless-steelplates and boulders, in dialogue with each other to heighten awareness of the world, in his words, “exactly as it is.”
